Let AI autonomously research any topic and generate a comprehensive cited report in your note.

Deep Research (Research & Expand) is a Max plan feature that uses an AI research agent to investigate any topic and produce a comprehensive, cited report — written directly into your note.

What it does

Unlike standard AI actions (which work from your existing note content), Deep Research actively searches the web, synthesizes information from multiple sources, and writes a structured markdown report with citations. It's ideal for:

• Getting a thorough overview of a topic you're just starting to study
• Expanding a sparse note into a well-researched document
• Finding sources and references on a subject you're exploring
• Adding depth to a summary or set of lecture notes

Starting a research session

You can optionally provide a specific research question or prompt. If you leave it blank, the AI uses your note's title and content to determine what to research.

What you get

The report is added to your note below a divider line. It's formatted in Markdown and includes:

• Overview — A high-level summary of the topic
• Key sections — Organized by subtopic or theme, with key terms in bold
• Key Takeaways — 5–7 bullet points of the most important points
• Sources — Numbered citations for all major claims

Because it's added to your note content, you can immediately generate flashcards from it or ask AI questions about the research.

How long it takes

Deep Research takes significantly longer than standard AI actions — typically 5–15 minutes, and up to 60 minutes for complex topics. A progress indicator shows while the agent is working.

Usage limits

Deep Research is only available on the Max plan — it is not included in Free, Plus, or Pro. Your remaining sessions for the month are shown before you start. See Subscription Plans for the current limit.

Source quality

The agent is optimized for academic and authoritative sources — peer-reviewed papers, textbooks, preprints, and institutional publications. Popular blogs and forums are deprioritized in favor of more reliable references.

Citations use the (Author et al., Year) inline format with a full References section at the end of the report — so you can trace every claim to its source.

Important considerations

• Reports are permanent. Once generated, the report becomes part of your note and can't be removed as a unit — delete the text manually if you don't want it.
• Verify critical facts. AI-generated research can contain inaccuracies. Always cross-check important claims against the cited sources.
